Essay Drafting
The essay drafting process is an exercise all students must grasp in order to write compelling essays on any topic. It does take a while to get used to the process. Once you are used to it though, every essay would go through a common process that would result in a well-written essay. The compilation does not take time, but time spent on research would depend on the topic and your knowledge of it. The draft is a rough representation of the essay, so changes can be made as and when required. Preparing the draft requires some knowledge. You need to follow steps that work in providing information, knowledge, and a sense of interest among readers.
An essay writing exercise starts with a rough draft including the main idea or thesis statement for your essay, supporting statements that elaborate on it, and research content that is based on your interpretation of the main idea. For example, you may want to write an essay on the Shakespearean play “Much Ado About Nothing.” The main idea would be writing about a character in the play or sequence of events. The support statements would be additional information on the main idea. They could be part of the play itself or content gathered through research.
The most important aspect of the process of essay drafting is to understand the topic. There would be instances when you may not have choice in selecting a topic. The process of writing the draft would not change. Read as much as time would allow about the topic you have to write on. Once you have a very good idea about it, sit down for a brainstorming session and think of ideas which could evolve into a sub topic you can elaborate on. The sub topic could be your comfort zone, an area you feel confident of writing about.
The process of gathering content through research begins after you have decided on the main idea for your essay. It has to be based on your thoughts arrived at during the brain-storming session. One should not anticipate the type of information to be gathered during research. In fact, the support statements could be derived during the process. A useful tip at this point would be to look for information from as many sites as possible. This would offer you a balanced viewpoint, especially if you are not familiar with the topic. Collect as much data to fit a lengthy research paper. You can always edit it later on.
You have to keep in mind that the conclusion would be summarizing the message through the thesis and support statements included in the essay. It has to be complete in its summary. For this to happen, focus on the thesis statement and provide a call for action at the end of the summary. To help in presentation, include content in the bulleted format so that reading becomes easy. The purpose of writing an essay is primarily to inform, review a topic, or narrate. If you can keep these elements in mind, gathering ideas and connecting them to reach a vast audience through essay drafting would be interesting and quite easy.
