An essay on gun control can effectively summarize laws prevalent in a country for or against possession of firearms. In the UK, they have always been framed to protect citizens from attacks involving guns. Though there is really not enough debate for or against gun control, the UK does have very stringent gun legislation. The rate of homicide involving guns is 40 times less than that in USA, where it is much easier to buy a gun. But there has been an increase in gun crime in Britain. In 1996, Thomas Hamilton, a former scout master entered a school in Dublin and went on a shooting spree killing 16 children and a teacher. The attack lasted just about three minutes but he killed helpless five and six-year-olds. This carnage reinforced the viewpoint that firearms should be banned in the UK.
There have been constant debates about whether the ban should be lifted. Since the 1997 incident, gun crime has increased by 89 percent. There is no evidence though that the ban has led to this increase. An essay writing exercise can highlight figures to show that the total number of offenses in England and Wales due to firearms increased from 5,209 in 1998 – 1999 to /99 to 9,865 in 2008. There has been a five-fold increase in some places compared to others. Policemen were at risk when they have to deal with armed violators. The constitutional aspect of the debate whether to allow owning a firearm for self defense has always been at the forefront of matters. This incident provoked people to demand changes in the law to protect a law-abiding citizen trying to protect family, property, and self. They could face a five-year imprisonment. There is a growing fear that the crime rate is likely to increase if there are no changes in the law. A major concern is security during the 2012 Olympic Games to be held here. Unfortunately, guns for sport have also come under legislation. Sports persons are bound by these laws and suffer due to lack of practice.
Several attempts have been made to correlate gun ownership and gun-related violence. No research paper has so far been successful in established a definite connection. A review of the laws governing firearms was made but to no avail. There is a chance that a time-trend analysis for new laws would be possible. It would be able to establish a connection and help in judging whether the law was effective or not. So far the success rate has been minimal. Hopefully, an essay on gun control would be able to provide some direction in this matter.
