Does it mean that smoking is really not as harmful as they say it is? On the contrary, smoking can cause serious damage to the mind and body. The World Health Organization has conducted studies indicating that 20% of pregnant women in developed countries smoke. Only a small percentage of these women refrain from smoking during pregnancy. This has had serious repercussions. Not only is the mother affected but babies are serious affected too. For example, nearly 11% of all stillborn births can be directly attributed to the use of tobacco during pregnancy.
Smoking affects people in many ways. It is an addiction that becomes very difficult to stop, almost like alcohol or drugs. It is found that stimulation is the main reason why people find pleasure in it. Tobacco contains nicotine which stimulates the brain and brings about temporary relief to tension or even generates excitement in a person. Some people have mentally adjusted to the fact that they would not be able to attend to the call of nature without having smoked a cigarette. Dopamine, a neurotransmitter found in humans, controls the urge to smoke or pick up an addictive habit.

Other diseases connected to smoking include heart attacks and stroke. The body shows signs of deteriorating when increased infections like bronchitis and pneumonia occur more often.
